As the first fashion designer presented 3D printed clothes during Paris fashion week, Iris Van Herpen definitely made a big wave. Focusing on fashion and technology is the characteristic of Herpen’s design aesthetic. She combines handmade artwork with digital inventions which means creating many more possibilities for clothes.

The Fall Winter 2015 is the latest collection of Iris Van Herpen that showed in March 2015 at the Palais de Tokyo keeping the same quality of fashion technology style that she is known for. In terms of the classic movie, Total Recall(The Paul Verhoeven edition), this season’s concept of terraforming was inspired by it's futuristic look. Terraforming, also known as earth-shaping, is a description of modifying its original elements such as the environment, atmosphere, temperature and surface topography to be similar to the earth. The film wasn't just an inspiration but also a fantasy of Herpens. She always had the idea to convert unique materials into wearable fabrics which is why this season she tried her best to make the garments more ready to wear.

When it comes to materials, yes Herpen doesn’t really use normal fabrics to make clothes or accessories, she is obsessed with new technology production. In her newest collection a brand new fabric had to be created. An extremely light, transparent stainless steel weave with hand-burning made pattern of nebula-like shapes which sent out psychedelic sheen with the models every movement on the runway. “When I imagine a silhouette, I also have its texture in mind," Herpen said at the backstage of her show. The special hand-made, woven textile was also a big bomb for the fashion industry. Because no one can really make extreme three-dimensional effects on fabrics as Herpen can. She keeps researching and testing different ways of 3D vision effect. The designer Aleksandra Gaca has joinned her creation, too. They made the woven textile to match the concept of terraforming, one weave was considered as geology, and many weaves enwrapped the whole human’s body means copying the same elements and transforming them into earth-taken things. Raw edge definitely made a perfect ending.

This collection is the most wearable one so far. Not only because the light fabric, but also the easy silhouettes. Most of the designs from the collection are lean and one-piece dresses. It makes it easier to wear out on the streets compared with her previous unconstrained skull-like dresses. “I tend to make more wearable garments from now on but will still keep my technology fantasy.” Herpen said in her studio. One of the shapes of design was truly impressive, the circular top with paper-folding effect in a steel fabric. It gave the feeling of futuristic mystery. Models with their faces partially covered like creatures from another planet.

The most attractive accessories in this collection were definitely the shoes. They are made in collaboration with the Japanese shoe designer Noritaka Tatehana, constructed from laser-cut leather and transparent crystal plastic heels. The reflective sheen created a gorgeous vision stemming from the feet. Simple nude make-up and smooth slicked back hair enhanced the futuristic mood.
