Visually Delicious Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in SF

Basik

Where: Russian Hill

What: Acai bowls and smoothies

Why: The antioxidant loaded superfood known as acai is having it's moment right now which is why it's more popular than ever before. Basik provides a small menu of smoothies and acai bowls that are filling and satisfying, not to mention beautiful. While many people think of vegetarian friendly options as being salads, the acai bowl is a frozen treat with all the sweetest fruit and house made hemp milk. Though the location itself is small, the clean environment and friendly staff make it a pleasant experience and will accommodate if you want to make specific alterations to your bowl. The fact that everything is vegan makes the bowls taste oh, so much sweeter.

Opened in 1979 it's been a staple of the Marina area and why shouldn't it be? It's chic in the quintessential California way and with food options such as stuffed eight ball squash, mesquite grilled brochettes, and wild mushroom shepherd's pie even the biggest carnivore won't complain. This restaurant gives variety with a view making it a must-go for those visiting or living in the bay area.

Seed + Salt

Where: The Marina

What: Vegan NorCal

Why: Seed + Salt is for everybody because they don't want to exclude people with allergies or food restrictions so you know all their food is plant-based without GMO's or refined sugar. While it seems like this type of menu might be restrictive, the chefs here have come up with beautiful and delicious options of your regular favorites. Beet burgers, coconut carrot soup or an eggplant BLT are all made without gluten but are presented chic enough that the Barefoot Contessa would approve. While with many things in life looks can be deceiving, Seed + Salt is as good as it looks if not better.

Gracias Madre

What: Mexican

Why: Just because you don't want to eat meat doesn't mean you stop craving quesadillas though these have roasted butternut squash and caramelized onions instead of chicken. This restaurant prides itself on their sustainability and incorporation of locally sourced organic ingredients while being affordable. Though the menu isn't as large as some other places, there are plenty of items to choose from even for a picky eater who won't mind switching out meat for coconut ceviche tostadas.
